Question

Which of the compounds C2H6O2,C2H6O,C2H6,CH4O could belong to the same homologous series.

Solution

Homologous series of compound lies in the same family and the molecular formula is different by one CH2 unit.

That is, if a compound adds or subtracts by one unit of CH2 from that compound then it is a homologous compound.

The homologue of Methanol (CH4O) or (CH3OH) compound is by adding one unit of CH2 to give Ethanol (C2H6O) or (C2H5OH).

CH4O+CH2C2H6OMethanolEthanol(lowerhomologue)(higherhomologue)

Hence, (CH4O) and (C2H6O) are homologous to each other.
