Alkane is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of alkene/alkyne on addition of H2 with catalyst Ni/Pt/Pd.
Thus, bulky substituent in alkene (b) and (c) will reduce the rate of hydrogenation due to crowding.
The catalytic hydrogenation is syn addition by forming a four membered transition state There will be more crowding for addition of H to the same side in (d).
