Glycolysis is the first step in respiration. It takes place in the cytoplasm. At the end of glycolysis of one molecule of glucose, two molecules of ATP, ${\mathrm{NADH}}_2$, pyruvic acid and water are formed. The pyruvic acid that is formed is converted into acetyl-co-A. This acetyl-co-A enters the Kreb's cycle and is completely oxidised to form carbon dioxide, water, ${\mathrm{NADH}}_2$ and ${\mathrm{FADH}}_2$.
