Question

Which of the following are insulators?

Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids

Open in App
Solution

Metals

  • Metals are known to be conductors as they have a maximum number of free electrons present in them.
  • The electrons show mobility when electricity is pass through them.

Nonmetals

  • Nonmetals are known to be insulators since they can't conduct electricity and heat.
  • They are called insulators because they do not have free electrons to move.
  • Therefore, on passing the electricity, no mobility of electrons can be seen through them.

Metalloids

  • Metalloids are having both the properties of metals as well as nonmetals so they have intermediate conductivity.
  • This implies that metalloids are conductive in nature better than non-metals but not as good as metals.

Therefore, Nonmetals are insulators.
