Solution

The correct option is D 1, 2 and 4
Single Cell Protein (SCP) is dried microbial biomass or total protein extracted from pure microbial (bacteria, algae, filamentous fungi and yeast) cell culture grown on agricultural wastes. SCP can be used as a food supplement for humans and animals.

Conventional agriculture is incapable of meeting the demand for food for the growing human and animal populations. The prevalence of meat based diet over grains, in the present times, is creating more demand for cereals. This is because 3 - 10 kg of grains is required to feed animals to produce 1 kg of meat by animal farming. This creates a lot of pressure on farmers for increased grain production.

SCP serves as a more economical alternative to this demand, due to their high multiplication rates and nutritional values. For example microbes like Spirulina can be easily cultured on agricultural wastes, animal manure, sewage, etc. to produce large quantities of biomass.

Thus SCP -
  • serve as a protein rich supplement in human diet as these microorganisms are rich in proteins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins.
  • help to reduce environmental pollution by effectively utilising the wastes.
  • reduce the pressure on agriculture to meet the demand of food as it can be produced in large quantities within a shorter duration with less cost.
Hence statements 1, 2 and 4 are advantages of SCP.

SCP is exclusively used as food supplement for humans and animals and is not used as an alternative to chemical fertilisers. Long-term use of chemical fertilisers can degrade soil quality and cause environmental pollution. Hence, they are replaced with biofertilisers (biological organisms which can increase soil fertility). Biofertilisers can be free-living or symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacteria, cyanobacteria and mycorrhiza (fungi associated with plant roots). Hence statement 3 is not an advantage of SCP.
