Nitric acid (HNO3), also known as aqua fortis. It is so called because it reacts with nearly all metals. It is used in the laboratory as an oxidising agent. It is used in the preparation of nitrate salt and fertiliser, Tri Nitro Toluene (TNT) which is a type of explosive. It is also used to purify gold. It is used in the preparation of aqua regia.
