Which of the following articles made of plastics 'can be recycled' and which 'cannot be recycled'?
Can be recycled: Plastic toys, Plastic covering on electrical wires, Plastic bottles
Cannot be recycled: Telephone instruments, Cooker handles, Electric switches
Thermoplastics are linear chained polymers while thermosetting plastics are cross-linked polymers and due to this thermoplastics are easily recyclable, compared to thermosetting plastics, because the polymer chain does not degrade when melted down. The weaker interactions between polymer chains break down at much lower temperatures, allowing thermoplastics to be recycled indefinitely while thermosetting plastics once heated and solidified cannot be recycled again.
Thermoplastics:- Plastic toys (Polythene), Plastic covering on electrical wires (PVC), Plastic bottles (Polythene)
Thermosetting plastics:- Telephone instruments (Bakelite), Cooker handles (Bakelite), Electric switches (Bakelite)
