A food chain is the sequence of transfer of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism. Every organism in nature occupies a specific place in the food chain and that is known as the trophic level.

A food web is the interconnection and interdependence of many food chains on each other. It shows different paths in which plants and animals are interlinked to each other.

The sun being the ultimate source of energy helps producers (green plants) to synthesise food which can be transferred to consumers.

Consumers depend on the producers directly (herbivores like deer) or indirectly (primary carnivores like fox through herbivores) for the food. When organisms die the trapped energy or minerals are released into their surrounding environment by decomposers (bacteria), again to be utilized by plants.
