It is only “paper currency” which is unlimited legal tender, i.e. it can be used to settle amounts of any value. Coins are legal tender. 50 paise coins can be offered as legal tender for dues up to Rs10 and smaller coins for dues up to Rs 1.

Cheques are not legal tenders.
