Aldehyde can be prepared by the dehydrogenation of alcohols. In this reaction, one hydrogen atom is removed from the OH group of alcohol and the other hydrogen atom is removed from the alpha carbon atom to form the carbonyl group. Suitable reagents are acidified potassium dichromate, acidified or alkaline potassium permanganate, dilute nitric acid or chromium trioxide.
