Question

Which of the following can show coordination isomerism?
(i) [Cu(NH3)4][PtCl4] (ii) [Fe(NH3)6]2[Pt(CN)6]3
(iii) [Co(NH3)6][Cr(C2O4)3] (iv) [Pt(en)3](SO4)2

Solution

Coordination isomerism is a form of structural isomerism in which the composition of the complex ion varies. In a coordination isomer the total ratio of ligand to metal remains the same, but the ligands attached to a specific metal ion change.
i) In [Cu(NH3)4][PtCl4]complex , both anion and cation can be metal complex ions which yields an isomer and this type of isomerism is referred to as coordination isomerism.
conclusion: hence the first(i) complex will show the coordination isomerism.
