Arsine is the simplest compound of arsenic. It is colourless and 2.5-times denser than air, with an odour resembling garlic. Arsine binds to haemoglobin of the red blood cells, destroying them. Arsenic disrupts ATP production. Arsenic inhibits pyruvate dehydrogenase, uncoupling oxidation phosphorylation. Arsenic poisoning also occurs through arsenic–oxygen compounds, especially arsenic trioxide, As2O3 (ATO), which is 500-times more toxic than pure arsenic.
