Poriferans are diploblastic and the cells are arranged in two layers. Choanocytes are also called as the collar cells maintain the water current in the sponges. They have a central flagellum with a tuft of microvilli. Sponges feed on minute organisms and small organic particles, which enter the body through water current and are ingested by the choanocytes.
The inner surface is covered with choanocytes, cells with cylindrical or conical collars surrounding one flagellum per choanocyte. The wave-like motion of the whip-like flagella drives water through the sponge's body.
