Chief cells are also known as peptic cells. They secrete digestive enzymes in their inactive forms. An inactive precursor of an enzyme is called zymogen. They secrete the enzymes for the breakdown of proteins- pepsinogen.
Oxyntic cells are also known as parietal cells. They secrete HCl, Castle’s Intrinsic Factor (CIF). HCl converts the inactive pepsinogen into active pepsin. CIF helps in the absorption of Vitamin B12.
Mucous cells are also known as goblet cells. They are present throughout the epithelium. They secrete mucus which protects the inner lining of the stomach from acid.
