Mycoplasmas are the smallest known living cells. They are facultative anaerobes which means they can survive both in the presence and absence of oxygen. Being a prokaryote, it lacks a membrane bound nucleus and instead has a region called nucleoid.
Penicillin is an antibiotic that attacks the cell wall and breaks down the peptidoglycan. Since mycoplasma do not have a cell wall, penicillin is ineffective against it.
