Look for Huckel’s criteria:
1. All the atoms that are part of the aromatic ring should be planar and they should be fully conjugated
2. The number of π electrons should be 4n + 2, n=0,1,2,…
Benzene is definitely aromatic with 6 π electrons. When 6 takes after 4n + 2 where n = 1.
Similarly naphthalene – the compound with two fused rings – is also aromatic with n =2.
Thiophene, the heterocyclic compound is also aromatic such that the sulphur atom is in sp2 hybrid orbitals.
The unhybrid pure p orbital has one of the lone pairs and the fully conjugated is made of 6 π electrons. So cyclopentadiene is non-aromatic.
