Clemmensen reduction
In Clemmensen reduction, aldehydes and ketones are reduced to their corresponding alkanes on reaction with zinc amalgam and hydrochloric acid.
Analysing the options
Option A:
Benzaldehyde into benzyl alcohol
Benzaldehyde cannot be converted into benzyl alcohol using Clemmensen reduction. It will give Toluene on reaction with
Zn−Hg/HCl
Option B:
Cyclohexanone can be coverted into cyclohexane by Clemmensen reduction.
Option C:
Benzoyl chloride into benzaldehyde
Benzoyl chloride cannot be converted into benzaldehyde by Clemmensen reduction.
Option (D)
Benzophenone into diphenyl methane
Benzophenone can be coverted into diphenylmethane by Clemmensen reduction.
Hence, options B and D are the correct answers.
