The First World War was fought between the Central Powers and the Allied Powers from 1914 to 1918. The Central Powers comprised of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire; Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan and the USA were the Allied Powers. India, being a colony of Britain, had to take part in the war. The British government deployed Indian soldiers from villages to fight the war on their behalf. Most of the soldiers from rural areas were forced to join the army.
