i.) Water is therefore referred to as a solvent: a substance capable of dissolving other polar molecules and ionic compounds. The charges associated with these molecules form hydrogen bonds with water, surrounding the particle with water molecules.

ii.) Water acts as a polar solvent because it can be attracted to either the positive or negative electrical charge on a solute. The slight negative charge near the oxygen atom attracts nearby hydrogen atoms from water or positive-charged regions of other molecules.

iii) pure water is a poor conductor since its molecules do not have free electrons to travel and thus transfer current. Pure water, however, rarely exists in nature. Salts, sediments and minerals often mix with water and create ions that conduct electricity.
