Solution

The correct option is B Boric acid/borax is an acidic buffer
Mixture of weak acid and salt of the weak acid and strong base will make a acidic buffer solution.
  • Boric acid is a weak acid. Borax is a salt of boric acid(weak acid) and NaOH (strong base). So the resultant solution is called a acidic buffer solution.
Mixture of weak base and salt of the strong acid will make a basic buffer solution.
Ammonium hydroxide/ammonium chloride is a basic buffer.
Henderson hasselbalch equation for acidic buffer is given by pH=pKa+log[salt][acid] and at 25oC pH+pOH=14. So the only correct ststement is (b).
