It it can loose this on electron in 3s orbital, it will acquire inert gas configuration which is the most stable. Hence, Na would have strong tendency to form electrovalent compound by loosing its valance electron in 3s orbital. Thus, it can easily form Na+, resulting in ionic compounds.
