Kattabomman joined the confederacy started by Marudhu Pandiyar after his appeal to Madras council. His march towards Sivagiri was perceived as aggressive move towards the company. Forces from Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur and Madurai was sent to Tirunelveli in 1799 which was headed by Major Bannerman. Major Bannerman issued an ultimatum to Kattabomman and recieved an evasive reply instead. This prompted Major Bannerman to take Panchalamkurichi.
