Solution

The correct option is B Melanization in peppered moths
Theory of natural selection and Lamarckism are two of the most important theories of evolution.

Lamarckism was proposed by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck. This theory states that during the lifetime of an organism new characters are acquired by the organism to utilize the resources efficiently in the habitat or environment. These acquired characters are inherited from one generation to another. This process continues and new species are evolved from the original one. This theory does not tell about the selection of one favourable character by nature.
Melanization in the peppered moths is an example of natural selection of Darwin’s evolution. So, melanization in the peppered moths does not support the Lamarckian concept of inheritance of acquired characters.

Some examples in favour of Lamarckism are:
  • Long neck and forelimbs of the Giraffes: Giraffes obtained its long neck by stretching it upwards to reach the available leaves from tall trees.
  • Absence of limbs in snakes: Limbs in snakes were a hindrance in crawling and burrowing, so gradually over a period of time they were reduced and disappeared.
  • Presence of webbed toes in aquatic birds: Aquatic birds developed webbed feet by constant stretching of the skin of their feet for skimming in the water surface and swimming.
  • Eyes are reduced in moles: Moles live normally underground and the absence of light in the burrows reduced the usage of eyes resulting in reduced eyes in moles.
So option b is the correct answer.
