Solution

The correct option is B
Case I:i<C
If angle of incidence lesser than the critical angle, i.e i<C, refraction occurs.

Angle of deviation, δ=ri.....(1)

According to the Snell'e law
μdsini=μrsinr

r=sin1(μdμrsini)

Putting the value of r in the equation (1), we get
δ=sin1(μdμrsin i)i.....(2)

When,
i=0 from (2),

δ=sin1(μdμrsin0)0

δ=0

When,
i=C, from (2),

δ=sin1(μdμrsinC)C

As we know, (sinC=μrμd)

δ=sin1(sinCsinC)C

δ=π2C........(3)

Case II:i>C

From ray diagram, angle of deviation, δ=π2i
when, i=C, we have
δ=π2C
Comparing above equation with the standard straight line equation,
y=mx+c
We can write, δ=2C+π........(4)
There is a discontinuity at i=C.

When equation (2) and (4) are plotted , we have graph as shown below.
Why this Question :
This question checks the variation of angle of deviation (δ) verses i for a prism under all possible circumstances.
