Osteoporosis is a disease in which bone weakening increases the risk of a broken bone. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly.
The parathyroids produce a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH raises the blood calcium level by: breaking down the bone (where most of the body's calcium is stored) and causing calcium release.
Women are at a higher risk for osteoporosis after menopause due to lower levels of estrogen, a female hormone that helps to maintain bone mass.
