Rift valleys are formed due to the tensional forces in the fault regions on the earth's surface. These rift valleys are V shaped with river banks with steep slopes. The upraised part in the rift is called as Hoarst and the valley is called as Garben.

Some of the rivers in India that flows through the rift valleys are Naemadha, Tapti and Mahi which is flowing in the westward direction; Damodar river in the eastward direction.
