Question

Which of the following ions is coloured in aqueous solution?
i) Cu2+
ii) Cu1+

Open in App
Solution

  • Cu2+ is coloured because d-d transition. It is only possible when d-subshell have unpaired electron. Cu2+ has partially filled orbital. Hence Cu2+is coloured.
  • It is not colored. To be colored, you need some kind of electron transition within the atom/ion. A basic necessity would be either unpaired electrons or a possibility of resonance. The d orbitals are fully filled, which means no unpaired electrons. The absence of electron transitions cause Cu+ to be a colorless ion.
