Solution

The correct option is A

Smoke

Explanation for the correct option:

(A) Smoke: Smoke is a colloid in which the dispersed phase is solid and dispersion medium is gas.

  • Smoke is an example of aerosol.

Colloids: A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture in which the size of the particles is so small that the particles cannot be seen with the naked eye.

  • Therefore, it only appears homogeneous but actually it is heterogeneous as the composition is not uniform throughout.
  • The diameter of the particles of colloids lies in the range of 10-6-10-9m.
  • These particles can scatter a beam of light passing through them and make the path of light visible. This is known as the Tyndall effect.
  • Examples of colloids: Milk, mist etc.

Dispersed phase: The phase which consists of the colloidal particles and present in the smaller quantity. In milk, liquid fat globules are the dispersed phase.

Dispersion medium: The phase in which the particles are dispersed and is present in the larger quantity. In milk, water is the dispersion medium.

Explanation for the incorrect options:

(B) Sea water: Sea water is a solution in which salt- mostly Sodium chloride (NaCl) is present in dissolved state. It is an example of solution.

Solution: A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.

  • When the size of particles is less than 10-9 m or 1 nm in diameter and cannot be seen with the naked eye, it is called as true solution.
  • It does not shows the Tyndall effect.
  • Tyndall effect: When particles can scatter a beam of light passing through them and make the path of light visible is called the Tyndall effect.

(C) Sugar solution: When Sugar (C12H22O11) is dissolved in water, sugar solution is obtained. It is also an example of true solution.

(D) Aspirin: Aspirin (C9H8O4) is a compound in which various elements like Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen are present in a fixed ratio in a chemically combined state.

Hence, option (A) is correct.
