Mesosomes are invaginations of the cell membrane when the bacterial cells are chemically fixed to be observed under the electron microscope. They were thought to have functions like cellular respiration, DNA replication etc. But later, it was discovered that the infoldings were caused due to chemical fixation techniques used in the lab- and that these mesosomes were not present in the bacterial cells originally.
