Which of the following is a measure of management of solid waste?
Waste collected from many sites of our cities was previously dumped indiscriminately without any processing and separation. Later, the method of separating waste into wet waste and dry waste was enforced. This separation made it easy to manage waste. The separation of solid waste is called Segregation of waste.
Waste can be effectively categorised into 3 types- Biodegradable wastes, Non-biodegradable wastes and Recyclable wastes.
Wastes should not only be separated, but it should be collected separately. A few state governments have made it mandatory to segregate waste at the point of the collection before dumping it or giving it away to the municipality.
Biodegradable waste: Waste that can be naturally broken down.
Recyclable waste: This includes all those materials which can be reused or materials that can be converted into products for reuse. This includes materials like glass, paper, plastic, etc.
Non-biodegradable waste: Non-biodegradable wastes cannot be naturally broken down or decomposed. These include certain ceramic ware, glass, plastic, plastic, thermocol, tetra packs, metal items etc.
