Static friction is the friction between two objects in contact with each other but it does not result in motion. Suppose you push a block placed on a rough surface. It does not move. The force provided by you is exactly equal to the frictional force provided by the rough surface. If you push a little more harder the opposing frictional force increases accordingly to balance the applied force. This happens until the frictional force value reaches its maximum.
