Friction depends upon the nature of the surface and the normal reaction. By increasing roughness of the surface and normal reaction, friction would be increased(Normal reaction is the force acting perpendicular to the surface in contact). Sprinkling of sand makes surface rough thereby increasing friction.

Friction can be reduced by decreasing the interlockings between the surfaces in contact. Some of the ways of reducing friction are
