There are four types of coal:
1. Anthracite: Hardest type of coal, releases a large amount of energy when burnt.
2. Bituminous: It is also known as soft coal, releases lesser amount of energy as compared to anthracite.
3. Sub-bituminous: Dull black coal, releases lesser amount of energy than bituminous.

4. Lignite: Softest kind of coal, releases the least amount of energy when burnt.

Peat is the dark fibrous material consisting of partly decomposed vegetable matter (organic matter). Under proper conditions, peat will turn into coal over periods of time.
