A simple lipid consists of fatty acid chain and glycerol linked together by an ester bond. Triglycerides are an example of simple lipids as it consists of three fatty acid chains linked to glycerol by an ester bond.

Apart from fatty acid chains and glycerol, if the lipid consists of any other group, then it is called compound lipid. Phospholipids are lipids which have a phosphate group attached to it. It is an example of compound lipids.

Lipids which are obtained from derivatives of simple and compound lipids are known as derived lipids. Terpenes, steroids and carotenoids are examples of derived lipids.
