An amino acid consists of an amino group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen and a side chain(R). Depending on the side chain, an amino acid can be classified into - acidic , basic and neutral amino acids.

Amino acids which have basic R-side chain are called basic amino acids. Arginine, lysine and histidine are the basic amino acids.

Those amino acids which have acidic R-side chains are called acidic amino acids. Aspartic acid is an example of acidic amino acid which has a carboxylic acid side group.

Amino acids which have an equal number of basic or acidic R-side chains are classified as neutral amino acids. For example - glycine.
