In a parallel connection, every unit connected gets an equal amount of voltage whereas in series connection every unit connected gets equal current flowing through them.
In a parallel connection, every unit connected is independent of the other, hence can be switched off or on without disturbing the other units whereas in series connection each unit connected is dependent on others, hence if one unit blows off then the circuit breaks.
In a parallel connection, the effective resistance is always less than the individual resistors whereas, in series connection, the effective resistance is always more than the individual resistors. Parallel connection requires more wire in comparison to the series connection as shown in the figure below.
