The army of rulers of North India has many times crossed Vindhyas. For example, during the times of Mauryas, Guptas, Tughlaqs etc. Alauddin was quite successful in his southern campaigns. However, he had no intention of annexing the southern states and exercising direct control over them. Instead, he wanted to extract tributes from them and ensure that they accepted his suzerainty.
