Solution

The correct option is A 2, 3, 5 and 6
Carbon is one of the essential elements for all the organisms which is provided by the biosphere. It is important to maintain the levels of carbon in the atmosphere. This is acheived by the carbon cycle.
  • Carbon dioxide is released to the atmosphere by respiratory activities of producers and consumers.
  • Decomposition of dead organic matter of land or oceans also releases some amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
  • Human activities such as burning of fossil fuels and deforestation (large scale felling of trees) has also contributed to the atmospheric carbon reservoir. Deforestation reduces the number of trees which fix carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by the process of photosynthesis. Hence, it results in the increase of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
Afforestation is the process of planting large number of trees in an area where no forest existed earlier. It results in the decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as there are more trees to fix atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
