Which of the following is incorrect about the placenta?
The placenta does not produce endocrine hormones
The placenta is a disc-like structure attached to the uterine wall and is involved in providing food and oxygen to the growing embryo. It also eliminates carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes. The umbilical cord is a cord containing blood vessels and connects the placenta with the foetus. The placenta is permeable to respiratory gases, nutrients and antibodies, but does not allow germs (except a few like HIV) to pass on from the mother to the foetus. It can also produce the endocrine hormones oestrogen and progesterone. This makes the levels of these hormones, especially progesterone, vital in some pregnancy tests.
