Prokaryotic cells are characterized by the absence of a membrane-bound true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, E.R. etc. Their DNA fibrils are present in the center of the cell, i.e., in the nucleoid. It consists of ribosomes which are the site of protein synthesis and have two subunits; large and small. Cell walls and cell membranes are also present.
