Pigments are the colour imparting agents which are responsible for giving colours to flowers and fruits in plants. Chlorophyll a imparts bluish green colour, chlorophyll b gives yellowish green, carotene gives yellowish orange and xanthophyll gives a yellow colour to the plants.
All these pigments can absorb light. However, only chlorophyll a participate directly in photosynthesis. All other pigments absorb light and transfer it to chlorophyll a. Hence, they are called accessory pigments.
