General Relativity predicted the expansion of the universe.
General relativity also predicts (or at least allows for) the existence of black holes.
Light always travels a path called a geodesic which is a straight line in curved space-time but this path appears curvy at first. If this path is visualised in a flat space-time it would be perfectly straight.
The time expansion due to gravity ends up being larger than the time dilation due to centripetal force. So the clock ticks faster than the ground-based clock.
