Sponges have both asexual and sexual modes of reproduction. The asexual mode of reproduction takes place either by budding, fragmentation or gemmule formation specifically in freshwater sponges. External reproduction takes place in water when the spermatozoa are released and carried by water currents to fuse with the egg of the other sponges. The majority of the sponges are hermaphrodite i.e., a single organism can produce both male and female gametes. There is the absence of specific reproductive organs the sperms are produced by the choanocytes and the egg is produced by the transformation of archaeocytes.
