The lac operon is an operon, or group of genes with a single promoter. The genes in the operon encode proteins that allow the bacteria to use lactose as an energy source. Lac operon becomes active only after inducing lactose, as it is a substrate for the enzyme beta- galactosidase. It also regulates the switching on and off of the operon which cannot be done by glucose and galactose.
