Solution

The correct option is B

Sugar syrup

The explanation for the correct option:

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substances to be separated

Crystallisation is one such separation method where the dissolved solid can be separated from the solution by cooling it.

(B) Sugar syrup: We can separate the dissolved sugar by heating the mixture and concentrating then allowing it to cool slowly. This will separate the dissolved sugar in crystal forms. This is called crystallisation process. We can also separate sugar from the solution by evaporation method but it results in charring of sugar.

The explanation for the incorrect option:

(A) Soil in water: Soil in water forms a suspension, where the particles are large enough to see with our naked eye and when the mixture left undisturbed, soil particles settle at the bottom and we can separate it by using the decantation method, where the upper water layer can be separated by tilting the container.

Soil particles which then contain some water can then poured into filter paper and then just by pressing with dry filter paper, we get soil separated.

(C) Lemon juice: We can not separate lemon juice using crystallisation method, since it contains water and citric acid which we can not usually separate.

(D) Starch in water: It forms a colloidal solution and we can separate the dispersed particles by centrifugation method, where the particles are forced to move to the bottom of the centrifuging tube (tube which carries the mixture). The tube can be rotated using a centrifugal machine and we can visually observe the particles settled down at the bottom after the centrifugation method

Therefore, option (B) i.e., sugar syrup can be separated using crystallisation technique.
