Which of the following is the basic defining characteristic of a living organisms?
Response to external stimuli
Locomotion, reproduction, and growth are all characteristics of living things but they aren't the defining characteristics. This is because there are living things like plants, which cannot move and yet are living. There are organisms who don't or can't reproduce in their entire lifespan like male organisms, yet they are called living. Also, all living things grow, but non-living things like glaciers can also grow. Hence, the ability to respond to stimuli is the only characteristic unique and essential for an organism to be living.
