As we know, the electronic configuration of hydrogen is 1 and that of oxygen is 2,6. So, hydrogen needs 1 more electron to attain stable duplet and oxygen need two more electrons to attain stable octet. So, each of the two hydrogen atoms shares an electron pair with oxygen atom such that hydrogen acquires a duplet configuration and oxygen acquires an octet configuration resulting in the formation of two single covalent bonds [H-O-H] in the molecule of water.
