Peshawar was a place of great military and geographical importance. This is the reason most of the rulers targeted Peshawar from the early ages. It had been ruled by many Muslim dynasties from the 12th century. In 1738 Nadir Shah invaded Peshawar. After that it was under loose control of the Afghan Durrani clan. From 1818, the Sikh army started invading in those regions. The army of Ranjit Singh included people from different religion and he had mordernised his army. This was the reason, he could the Afghan counterattack during the Battle of Peshawar.
