Which of the following is the first stage of labour?
Cervical dilation
At the beginning of labour, contraction lasting 30 secs or less occurs about every 25 to 30 mins and by the end, these contractions last 60 to 90 secs and occur every 2 to 3 mins. Each contraction begins at the top of the uterus and sweeps downwards forcing the foetus towards the cervix. The contractions stimulate the mother’s pituitary gland to secrete more oxytocin, which in turn acts on her uterus, increasing its contractions and dilating or widening the cervix to allow the baby to pass through. This is the first stage of labour. The second stage is the delivery of the baby, and the third is delivery of the placenta.
