Solution

The correct option is C

NH3>NF3>NCl3

Explanation of the correct option:

C. NH3>NF3>NCl3

  • In NH3 , N is more electronegative than H, so the bond in N-H dipole moment is from H to N and in case of NF3, F is more electronegative than N, so electron will move from N to Fand in NCl3,Cl is more electronegative than N so electron will move from N to Cl, but Cl electronegativity is less than F.

Explanation of the incorrect options:

A: HF>HCl>HBr

  • As F is a more electronegative element than Cl and Br.
  • So the order of arrangement is correct for the dipole moment.

B: NH3>NCl3>NF3

  • In case of NH3 > NCl3 > NF3, NH3 electrons will move from H to N.
  • NCl3 dipole moment is more than NF3, because in NCl3 bond pair-bond pair repulsion is more, so its bond angle is also more than NF3.

D: CH3Cl>CH3F>CH3Br

  • In CH3Cl > CH3F > CH3Br, in CH3Cl the C-Clbond length is greater than C-F bond length.
  • Because of this, the separation of charges is more in CH3Cl as a result of which dipole moment is more in CH3Cl than CH3F.
  • Br is less electronegative than F,Cl so its dipole moment is also less.

Hence, the correct option is C i.e. the incorrect order of dipole moment is NH3 > NF3 > NCl3
